REGINA -- After weeks of speculation, the Saskatchewan Roughriders confirmed Sunday the signing of defensive lineman John Chick.

Chick returns to the Riders after spending the last three seasons in the National Football League. This will be the Gillette, WY natives second stint and fourth season with the Green and White after originally joining the team in 2007. In his first season, Chick started 13 games, recording five sacks, on his way to being named the Riders Most Outstanding Rookie and helping the club win the Grey Cup. Injuries limited him to eight games in 2008 before breaking out in 2009 with 32 defensive tackles and 11 quarterback sacks while being named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

The 30-year-old entered the NFL in 2010 with the Indianapolis Colts before moving to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the next two seasons where he appeared in a total of 19 regular season games.

Chick had been on the Riders radar for some time after he expressed intrerest in returning. Two weeks ago, Riders GM Brendan Taman addressed whether or not he was interesed in bringing Chick back into the fold.

“I think we have a really good chance to some degree if he comes to Canada," Taman told Riderville.com

"I don’t know if that will ever happen but if he does come to Canada I think we’ll be in the running for sure.”

Great news, but I saw him go down with Jacksonville the night he wrecked his leg. It didn't look good, drove him off the field. If the leg holds, then the signing was smart, but there is an element of risk.

Awesome!
Fingers crossed that he isn't affected by that pesky "NFL curse".

The addition of Chick enhances the D-Line which is already been pointed out on the comments below. In other words; creates options on schemes that allows others to step up. In essence; Rider coaches know what needs to be done as Chick is not expected to do the job [pass rush] alone.

IT's about time.
Like I said a month ago, Chick was a game changer and The Riders needed to cough up and offer John a "substantial, secure contract"
and get him back in Regina
Excellent Job Taman!!!

This Old Man
He's older, and he'll have to show the same commitment/fitness level and single-mindedness he did before the fact, and that doesn't always happen to ex-NFL-CFLers. If he gets out-worked and out-played in training-camp....well.... I hope he's ready! If he plays at the level he did back when, he'll be great. Best of luck! TOM
