REGINA -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed non-import kicker Sandro DeAngelis and import defensive lineman Jay Alford.

Financial details of the agreements announced Monday were not released.

The five-foot-nine, 195-pound DeAngelis is a five time West Division all-star, three time CFL all-star and was named Most Outstanding Canadian of the 2008 Grey Cup.

The Niagara Falls, Ont., native joined the Calgary Stampeders in 2005, before signing with Hamilton for the 2010 season and most recently the Montreal Alouettes for 2011.

The six-foot-three, 304-pound Alford returns to the Roughriders after attending training camp in Regina but failing to make roster.

Alford won the 2011 UFL Championship with the Virginia Destroyers. Prior to that, he spent three seasons in the NFL including the 2007-08 season in which he won the Super Bowl with the New York Giants.

Sandro's "bad" in Hamilton was still 76.2% which is not that bad. He performed well below expectations but he was alright. And there isn't a team in the CFL that wants to see separate players do the K and P. If you have a guy that can do both, that's a huge bonus as it basically gives you a free roster spot. Every CFL team ideally wants one guy handling all three kicking roles. It doesn't often work out that way, though. Whyte is not really doing a poor job punting, Montreal brought in (not back) McKnight because he was their first round pick a year ago. Milo is doing a poor job kicking field goals so it makes sense to bring in Sandro, but they'll have to burn a roster spot to get both DeAngelis and Milo in the line-up so Sandro will have to clearly outplay him to stay in...

Indeed he did not play at all in montreal but did spend the entire season on the 46 man roster but never dressed. He really only played bad in Hamilton. Montreal thought enough of him to keep him as an insurance policy. Chamblain explained that it th one place that they do not have any depth and that with Milo doing all three jobs he could be worn down. Chamblain would like to see seperate players to do the K and P. Montreal has even brought back mcknight the als 3rd kicker on the PR i believe to push whyte to do a better job punting Chamblain has admitted that that is also what is happening here. He continues to stick with the philosophy of depthe everywhere to push the starters and if you do not perform you will be replaced.
Chamblain and Chanblain have been one step ahead of the rest of the league in bringing in new faces Like Alford who was cut and not the same old import retreads just because of their CFL experince placing football experience and talent ahead as more solid NFL free agents are familiar with the CFL and the transition is no longer as steep a curve with the recent National coverage on reputable sports Netwrks.
So far he has been right as the riders have 13 starters with 1 or 0 cfl experience. With sincorice Moss ready to come off the IR to push Jackson in returns and for a WR spot that they have been desperatley looking to fill the hole left by Bagg

Maybe Sandro kicks better in the west than he did in the east! He was HUGE disappointment when in black and gold and didn't play at all I don't think last season in Montreal!
