REGINA -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders are shutting down franchise quarterback Darian Durant for the remainder of the season.
Durant said Tuesday that he wouldn’t start Saturday’s CFL game against the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats or the season finale Nov. 4 versus the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium. Riders’ backup Ryan Dinwiddie is to start Saturday. Cole Bergquist, third on the quarterback depth chart, might also see some playing time.
Durant has started the past two games with a broken bone in his left foot and a sprained left ankle. He also started Friday’s 25-13 loss to the host Calgary Stampeders but didn’t finish the game after being sacked by Demetrice Morley early in the fourth quarter.
“Coach Miller and I talked about what was best for the team,’’ Durant said Tuesday. “We had a pretty lengthy discussion about it. At the end of the day, we both decided that the best thing to do may be to relax and go into the off-season healthy so I can get six good months of training in.’’
The Riders (4-12) have two games left in the regular season.
The Riders were eliminated from playoff hunt after losing 29-18 to the B.C. Lions on Oct. 16.
