EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos are giving fans an extra reason to celebrate this holiday season. The club has signed the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year JC Sherritt to a contract extension – keeping him out of free agency in February.

The new deal will keep Sherritt in Green and Gold through the 2015 season. As per club policy, the terms of the contract will not be disclosed.

"JC personifies what is meant when we say 'Eskimo Way'. He is an extremely talented player who has character beyond reproach,” says Head Coach Kavis Reed. “He is a core player who will help us in our championship quest."

Sherritt initially signed with Edmonton on April 20, 2011 as a free agent. The Eastern Washington product made an immediate impact, racking up 74 defensive tackles, three quarterback sacks and was named the Western Nominee for Rookie of the Year.

In 2012, Sherritt made a league-leading and recording-setting 130 defensive tackles. He also recorded three sacks, three special teams tackles, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, two knockdowns and five interceptions for 56 yards. His stellar performance garnered him 49-of-57 votes cast by CFL coaches and members of the Football Reporters of Canada to win the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year Award.

He was also named a 2012 West Division and CFL All-Star.

Securing Sherritt to a contract was a priority for the Eskimos and adds to a growing number of players the club has signed on their list of free agents. In the past couple weeks the Esks have also extended the contracts of kicker Grant Shaw, linebacker TJ Hill and offensive lineman Brian Ramsay.

"These signings keep the nucleus of this football team intact," says Reed.  "We are extremely proud to have them be a part of this team because of their talent and character."

The Ti-Cats need to be looking for players of this calibre for their D and then keeping them.

If Hervey didn't sign him I would be surprised if he didn't leave town. That's what free agents typically do.
