TORONTO -- The Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers completed a trade Tuesday night that will see DB Alex Suber head to Toronto in exchange for DL Thaddeus Gibson.
Gibson signed with the Argos in May of this season. He has played in five games with Toronto this season, started three, and recorded six tackles, one sack and one interception.
“Thaddeus has professional football experience on both sides of the border, has shown great promise when he’s had opportunities to get in the lineup, and will add depth to our defensive line immediately,” said Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters.
Gibson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 4th round (116th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft, and spent four years in the NFL.
He played for the San Francisco 49ers, where he totalled three tackles in two games, and also spent time with the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans, and was most recently a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
Prior to his time in the NFL, Gibson played three seasons for the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he tallied 82 combined tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 10 quarterback sacks.
Suber originally joined the Bombers in 2010, however has not dressed for a game this season.
“Alex has been a consummate professional for this franchise for nearly five seasons. We thank him for everything he has done for this organization both on and off the field, and wish him the best in Toronto,” Walters said.
“Alex is an instinctive player who adds quality CFL experience to our secondary. He has played within defensive coordinator Tim Burke’s system before and we’re happy to welcome him to Toronto,” added Argos GM Jim Barker.
A veteran of 65 regular season CFL games over five years, Suber has recorded 226 defensive tackles, 28 special teams tackles, three interceptions, six fumble recoveries and 15 tackles for a loss.
A product of Middle Tennessee State, he joined the Blue Bombers as a free agent in June 2010 and dressed in the club’s 2011 Grey Cup appearance.
