TORONTO -- Kevin Glenn, Brandon Smith, Markeith Knowlton and Dave Stala were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week 10, the Canadian Football League announced today.
The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Kevin Glenn was masterful in conducting the Ticats offence, leading them to their fourth straight win and earning Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The Hamilton quarterback completed 27 of 33 passes for 313 yards and one touchdown, protecting Ivor Wynne Stadium against the rival Argos with a 28-13 victory on Labour Day.
It was Glenn’s fifth 300 yard passing game of the season. He also rushed for five yards on two carries.
Stampeders receiver Romby Bryant was named runner up.
Brandon Smith was a key contributor for the Stamps on defence this week, leading his club to a dominant 52-5 win over the Eskimos. Smith recorded the first two interceptions of his young career, returning one for a touchdown. The Stamps’ defensive back intercepted a Ricky Ray pass intended for Kelly Campbell and returned the ball 58 yards for a touchdown. Smith added one tackle and also intercepted Esks backup QB Jared Zabransky late in the third quarter.
The two interceptions by Smith brought Calgary’s total to a league-leading 13 interceptions and 32 takeaways through nine games so far this season.
Korey Banks from the BC Lions was named runner-up
Hamilton linebacker Markeith Knowlton provided the game-changing highlight, which led the Ticats to a 28-13 win over the visiting Argos. Knowlton blocked a Jamie Boreham punt in the final minute of the first half and recovered the ball in the endzone for a touchdown. The outstanding play made Knowlton the first player to have two blocked kicks in the 2010 season.
The Ticat standout is currently in his fifth CFL season and third as a member of the Ticats.
He was a unanimous selection.
Wide receiver Dave Stala provided another solid performance for the Ticats, as they defeated the Argonauts 28-13 in the Labour Day Classic. Stala racked up 90 yards on seven catches, including a 15-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter to put an exclamation point on the Hamilton victory. The Ticats receiver converted on two second-downs in the game, bringing his total to a team-leading 18 on the season.
Stala is the first three-time winner of Gibson’s Finest Player of the Week honours in 2010, having previously won the Canadian award in weeks three and six.
Calgary running back Jon Cornish was named runner up.
