WINNIPEG – Unable to come to terms before hitting the free agent market, Korey Banks is trading in his orange and black for blue and gold.

The Blue Bombers and BC Lions completed a trade Friday that would send the veteran defensive back to Winnipeg in exchange for non-import wide receiver Kito Poblah.

Banks is a ten-year CFL veteran, spending the last eight seasons with the Lions. Regarded as a shutdown defensive back, Banks has been a CFL all-star five times, a division all-star eight times and has nabbed 37 interceptions in his career – including 27 as an eight-year starter with the B.C.. He broke into the league in 2004 with the Ottawa Renegades.

The 2013 season  saw Banks conclude with 46 tackles, three special teams tackles, one sack, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

"Korey adds an immediate presence in our locker room, veteran leadership both on and off the field, and we look forward to welcoming him to the Bomber organization. We also wish Kito all the best in Vancouver and thank him for his contributions to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers,” said General Manager Kyle Walters.

Poblah was selected in the 2011 supplemental draft by Winnipeg. He dressed in 34 games over three seasons, catching 53 passes for 534 yards and one touchdown.

“We’re grateful for Korey’s contributions to our club and we wish him the best in Winnipeg,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono.

Poblah joins the Lions after three seasons in Winnipeg where he has appeared in 34 career games. The Montreal native and Central Michigan grad was a supplemental draft selection by the Bombers in 2011 with his best numbers coming in 2012 recording 41 receptions for 417 yards and a touchdown.

now that the SB is won by seattle and the NFL season is over I expect the alouettes to name their new HC and OC and it wouldn't surprise me if they came from 1 or both SB teams!!

Looks like the Bombers are going after the old vets to possibly improve their record in 2014. In fact they should go after the young up and comers and let them play to get where they want to go. Getting Burris for a year or two to pl;ay QB will just prolong the development of other QBs that need playing time to get better. GO BIG BLUE!!

Good trade for the bombers, Banks is a proven solid performer. Can't help thinking he would have provided a lot more value for a team like the ticats.

@Spec13 - In case you haven't noticed, Austin has been getting rid of vet players and I doubt he would go for a 35 year old DB!

Why would they trade if he was set to become a free agent? I thought I read a few days ago that he was entering his option year. Anyway he'll likely sign with the Bombers since he didn't seem to want to stay in BC.

Now they can pick up B. Parker and have a strong veteran defensive backfield. If all of them, J. Johnson, etc. have lost a step, they'll all be on the same page. Don't forget Hank and I'm sure "The Over the Hill Gang" will make some fuss and win some games.

I wonder if the BBs won't come to regret this trade down the road. I suspect that Kito could turn into a very good receiver when he finally gets to play on a team with a good QB. The BBs have a history of dumping receivers who go on to blossom elsewhere.
