The Saskatchewan Roughriders offence has certainly had its fair share of turmoil during the 2008 season, but through it all, there has been one constant: Wes Cates.
Despite the significant injuries to quarterbacks, receivers and offensive linemen the Riders keep churning out victoriesand they have done so by giving the ball to #20 and letting him run.
Cates is having best season in his CFL career. His 672 yards rushing put him on pace to rush for 1,678 yards, the highest total in the league since Mike Pringle ran for 1,778 yards in 2000. Cates has also caught 24 passes for 286 yards. He has a league leading nine touchdowns and would be on anybody’s short list if they were handing out the M.O.P hardware today.
Notwithstanding all of Cates glowing numbers, it is clear that he means more to the team than any figure could calculate. Cates gives the Riders stability on offence and the fact that he can eat up both yards and time on the clock allows the Riders defence and special teams to stay well rested throughout the game.
CFL.ca sat down with Cates to talk about his road to the pros from working at a convenience store to CFL stardom.
