Allen Scores Saskatchewan's First

CFL.ca Staff

Sunday night, we all saw what Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Anthony Allen could do once the reps became meaningful.

In the Riders season opener, Allen ran wild to the tune of 158 yards on 27 carries.  He also added a touchdown on the ground and another through the air.

Allen is relatively unknown to those who follow the CFL, expected to come in and fill the shoes left by Kory Sheets.

Here is a look at what the Georgia Tech grad did before he turned pro:

AA looked real good to me. From Georgia Tech, Engineering School like Purdue. Purdue is Kory Sheets' old school. I guess they were/are building great careers. That's what Engineers do.

Of course Allen won't run for +100 yards per game, and neither will Cornish. The O line will make sure that we still get a good run game no matter who is back there. Time will tell if the Riders platoon two alternating backs or not. Right now I think they are happy with Allen.

Yeah, one game doesn't prove much, but it was a promising start. He's not as shifty as Sheets but is a horse, so he can break more tackles. Sheets often needed to move laterally to get free. I'd still take Sheets at this juncture, but here's a thought, get Kory back by Labour Day and perhaps have the best one-two punch since the Silas McKennie - George Reed days. You don't see the two RB's behind the QB much anymore, usually only one behind the QB on any given play. Why is that???

@SF56: it's called the PASSING GAME!!

I get that, but it sure kept the defence guessing who was getting the ball, opened other options like more screen and swing passes, gave more blocking schemes, and just added more diversity to the game. Perhaps I'm alone, but I miss the two back system.

You mean by pouting & leaving after being caught with pot & speeding or...? One game doesn't make Allen the second coming! Look who he played against.

So we aren't supposed to be excited that he looks promising? Sounds like you're a little bitter that our running game won't be lacking like everyone's been hoping it will. It's got something to do with the OL and the OC as much as the carrier.

No one had heard much about Cory Sheets before he came to Sask. Allen comes from the same place...good Rider scouting. Lets hope he has the same impact as Sheets had.
