Making the connection

Selecting a winner for this year's Challenge was difficult, as an excellent case could be made for all 8 pairs. In a span of less than 2 months, we saw some absolutely outstanding results across the board when it came to improving various cardiovascular risk factor measurements such as weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and others. In addition to improved numbers, it was clear that all 8 pairs took the necessary steps to better understand their cardiovascular risk factors and to make their day-to-day lives more heart-healthy!

Just as important as the impact they had on their own lives was the impact they were able to have on others in their community. And though all participants were strong in this area, this is where the winners of the Challenge really distinguished themselves. From heart-healthy dinners with family and friends to their "no more couch potato" workshop established for colleagues at work, the impact has already been felt by many. Through these and other creative approaches, they have encouraged those around them to work with health professionals to better understand and manage their cardiovascular health, to eat healthier, to increase the level of physical activity in their day-to-day lives, and to live smoke-free.

Therefore, it is our pleasure to
announce that this year's winners
are Mike and Shelley Malyk
from Winnipeg!

Mike and Shelley were supported throughout the Challenge by Jamie Stoddard of the Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Kinesiologist Jennifer Onyskie. We would like to thank Jamie, Jennifer and all of the players, trainers and dietitians from across the country for their tremendous participation and support. Of course, we would also like to congratulate Mike and Shelley for their unbelievable efforts, as well as those of the other 7 pairs who should also be recognized as true champions of cardiovascular health.

Thank you to all for another successful Challenge!
