Close to 21,000 rabid East Coast football fans will have a rare treat this weekend as the Tiger-Cats and Stampeders storm into Moncton for the CFL’s Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic game.
Both teams will head into Moncton in the midst of a hot-and-cold streak, as each side tries to take a step forward in the standings.
A Hamilton win coupled with a Montreal loss this weekend will move the Ticats into second place in the East Division, while a Calgary W and an Edmonton loss will move the Stampeders into first in the West.
Obviously a lot is riding on Touchdown Atlantic 2011.
Hamilton will be the home side at Stade Moncton Stadium on the Université de Moncton campus, and will be relying heavily not only on quarterback Kevin Glenn to bounce back after a tough outing last week, but also on its sometimes-permeable defence to contain the Henry Burris-led Calgary offence.
Glenn was roughed up in last week’s 38-23 home loss to the Eskimos, completing just 14 passes for 140 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception, while being sacked five times.
However, when on his game, Glenn has the ability to be one of the most deadly passers the CFL has to offer. The 11-year veteran sits just one back of Burris for third place in touchdown passes with 15, and has the East Division’s second best quarterback efficiency rating at a solid 92.7.
The Ticats’ defence was equally bruised as Edmonton pivot Ricky Ray piled up 25 completions for 227 yards and a major, while running back Jerome Messam was the story of the game with 139 yards and a pair of scores on 15 carries.
Hamilton, however, features one of the league’s quickest and most agile defensive lines. Led by the always-dangerous Stevie Baggs, the group will be looking to make life in Moncton very uncomfortable for Burris.
The Stamps, meanwhile, feature a dangerous ground game with Joffrey Reynolds and Jon Cornish in the backfield and Burris’ ability to move the ball with his feet always a danger. Burris has shown he can be stopped, however, with less-than-MVP performances in two of Calgary’s last three games – losses to Edmonton on Labour Day and BC last week.
Overall,Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic has the potential to feature an offensive explosion on either side, and regardless of which squad comes out with the win, it’ll have a huge impact on the standings as the 2011 season moves into its final third.
