Canadian Football League Week #17

Toronto, ON – (October 27, 2009) – Romby Bryant, Justin Hickman, Jovon Johnson and Rob Bagg were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week 17, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson’s Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WR – Romby Bryant – Calgary Stampeders

Highlights / Key Stats:

Romby Bryant had a career game on Friday night against the Eskimos. Bryant led the Stampeders with career highs of nine receptions and 211 yards. Bryant made numerous big plays for the Stamps with five receptions for more than 20 yards and three for more than 40.

Bryant’s longest catch was a 47-yarder in the fourth quarter to help set up a one-yard Henry Burris touchdown. He had another big catch on the Stampeders’ next possession, hauling in a 46-yard pass to help set up another Calgary touchdown.

Bryant was acquired by the Stamps in a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last month.

Gibson’s Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DE – Justin Hickman – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26 @ Toronto Argonauts 17

Highlights / Key Stats:

Justin Hickman dominated the line of scrimmage for the Tiger-Cats in their victory over the Argonauts on Friday night. Hickman put constant pressure on Argos QB Kerry Joseph, recording four tackles including three sacks in the victory.

Two of Hickman’s sacks came in the fourth quarter to help ensure the Argos could not make a comeback. Hickman sacked Joseph for losses of one, nine and 11 yards. Hickman now has six sacks this season to put him one back of Khari Long’s team leading seven in the category.

Gibson’s Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KR/CB – Jovon Johnson – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Montreal Alouettes 24 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41

Highlights / Key Stats:

Jovon Johnson had a great game returning kicks for the Bombers in their upset win over the league leading Alouettes on Saturday. Johnson racked up 254 total return yards including a highlight reel 79-yard punt return touchdown.

Johnson’s 79-yarder in the fourth quarter helped ensure the 41-24 victory. On the return Johnson fielded the punt at his own 31, took the ball sideline to sideline, eluding several tackles before breaking up the middle for the score.

Johnson has been named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week three of the past four weeks.

Gibson’s Finest CFL CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WR – Rob Bagg – Saskatchewan Roughriders

BC Lions 30 @ Saskatchewan Roughriders 33

Highlights / Key Stats:

Kingston, Ontario native Rob Bagg had another excellent game for the Roughriders in their 33-30 overtime victory over the BC Lions on Saturday. The second year Rider out of Queen’s University led the team with eight receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Bagg scored on a 32-yard pass from Darian Durant to put the Riders up 14-3 in the second quarter. Bagg has stepped his game up in the two games since teammate Weston Dressler went down with injury, recording 16 catches for 176 yards over that span.
