Canadian Football League Week #19

Toronto, ON – (November 10, 2009) – Arkee Whitlock, John Chick, Damon Duval and Andy Fantuz were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week 19, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson’s Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RB – Arkee Whitlock – Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights / Key Stats:

Arkee Whitlock capped off his impressive rookie season by rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries to help the Eskimos secure third place in the West on Friday night. Whitlock also added a pair of catches for seven yards in the victory.

The Eskimos nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie finished the regular season third in the league in rushing with 1,293 yards and tied for second with 13 total touchdowns. Whitlock also had 44 receptions for 392 yards and was one of only two featured running backs in the league to average more than six yards per carry.

Gibson’s Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DE – John Chick – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Calgary Stampeders 14 @ Saskatchewan Roughriders 30

Highlights / Key Stats:

John Chick led the way for a Rider defence that held the Stampeders to just 14 points on Saturday as the Riders clinched the top seed in the West. Chick led the Riders with a season high six tackles and one sack in the victory.

Chick earned his 11th sack of the season when he out muscled Calgary’s Jeff Pilon to get to Henry Burris and drop him for a loss of 13 yards at the Calgary four yard-line. Saskatchewan’s nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player finished the regular season tied with teammate Stevie Baggs for the second most QB sacks in the league.

Gibson’s Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

K – Damon Duval – Montreal Alouettes

Montreal Alouettes 42 @ Toronto Argonauts 17

Highlights / Key Stats:

Damon Duval set a new CFL regular season scoring record on Saturday with 242 points. The Alouettes kicker was a 7/7 on field goal attempts and 3/3 on extra points against the Argonauts on Saturday. With his 24 points in the game, Duval passed former Argos great Lance Chomyc for the record.

Duval also bumped his field goal accuracy up to a league best 87.3% for the season. Duval finished the season connecting on 55/63 field goal attempts, 56/56 extra points and had 21 singles.

Gibson’s Finest CFL CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SB – Andy Fantuz – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Calgary Stampeders 14 @ Saskatchewan Roughriders 30

Highlights / Key Stats:

Chatham, Ontario native Andy Fantuz had a career-high 12 receptions for 123 yards to lead the Riders to a 30-14 victory over the Stampeders on Saturday night. It was the second time this season that Fantuz has caught 10 or more passes. Fantuz was instrumental in keeping drives going for the Riders all night, catching seven passes on 2nd down that resulted in Rider first down conversions.

Fantuz finished the regular season with a career-best 67 receptions for 882 yards and four touchdowns despite only playing in 13 games for the Riders this season.
