ANTIGONISH, N.S. — The commissioner of the CFL says the dream of a franchise in Atlantic Canada is a possibility, but not a probability.
Mark Cohon was in Antigonish, N.S., Tuesday as the league gets ready to play a regular season game on Sunday in Moncton, N.B., between the Toronto Argonauts and the Edmonton Eskimos.
Cohon said the idea of a CFL franchise in Atlantic Canada is decades old, but the league still isn’t making any promises.
“Do I think that dream is becoming a possibility? I think yes, it’s becoming a possibility. Is it a probability or a reality? The answer is that we’re not there yet,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”
Cohon says with extra seats added to the Moncton Stadium, it will have 21,000 seats for Sunday’s game.
He says a franchise would need a stadium with at least 25,000 seats in a permanent facility.
“There’s many things we need. We need to make sure there’s a fan base here. We need to make sure there’s a stadium that can handle a CFL football franchise,” he said.
