WINNIPEG — Jonathan Hefney is remaining with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The defensive back re-signed with the CFL club Tuesday, hours before he was eligible to become a free agent. Contract details weren’t immediately available.

Hefney was the East Division’s top rookie in 2009 after cracking Winnipeg’s starting lineup and registering four interceptions and 66 tackles. He also was a productive member of the CFL club’s special teams.

Hefney began last season on the practice roster of the NFL’s Detroit Lions. He returned to Winnipeg late in the year and started the Bombers’ final five games, recording two interceptions and 25 tackles.

“We’re very happy that we were able to work something out with Jonathan before he became a free agent,” Bombers’ GM Joe Mack said in a statement. “Jonathan brings a certain dynamic to our team that can’t be replaced and we look forward to having him participate in a full training camp this year and returning to the all-star player he was in 2009.”

Hefney said he’s looking forward to having a full season with Winnipeg in 2011.

“I’m glad I was able to get this deal done,” he said. “This organization supported me when I tried out for the NFL and I’m looking forward to being able to return to Winnipeg for a full season and build off what we were able to do last year.”
