WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced topday that non-import offensive lineman Ibrahim “Obby” Khan has re-signed with the club. Khan became a free agent on February 16.
The 6-foot-3 300 pound Khan was the Blue Bombers’ starting centre for every game last season and was part of an offensive line that opened up holes for the league’s leading rusher, Fred Reid. Khan was originally selected second overall in the Ottawa dispersal draft in 2006 and has since become a mainstay on the offensive line even after suffering through a serious illness in 2007. Khan’s CFL career began in 2004 when he was drafted in the first round (2nd overall) by the Ottawa Renegades in the CFL Canadian Draft. He spent two years with the ‘Gades making ten starts and showed off his versatility by playing all three positions on the offensive line.
“We are very glad we were able to re-sign a veteran like Obby,” said Vice President and General Manager Joe Mack. “He is a Canadian player with experience which is very important in order to be successful in this league.”
Khan has made Winnipeg his home year-round and is very active in the community. He is the spokesperson for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Manitoba/Saskatchewan and volunteers his time with the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, Variety Children’s Charity of Manitoba and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
“Winnipeg is home for me so I’m very glad we were able to work this out so that I can stay a Blue Bomber,” said Khan. “I believe in the direction the club is going in and look forward to training camp opening up in June.”
