MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes-Hamilton Tiger-Cats rivalry is starting to heat up.
The Alouettes signed former Hamilton running back DeAndra’ Cobb on Friday. The move comes after the Ticats dipped into free agency in February to sign former Montreal tailback Avon Cobourne, who was the MVP of the Als’ 2009 Grey Cup victory.
Cobourne’s arrival in Hamilton made Cobb expendable as he was released by the Ticats.
The five-foot-10, 196-pound Cobb spent two seasons with Hamilton, rushing for 2,390 yards and 13 TDs while adding 98 catches for 876 yards and five touchdowns. The former Michigan State Spartan was drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons and also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006.
Montreal also signed defensive end Kitwana Jones. The six-foot, 240-pound Jones spent six seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, helping the team win the Grey Cup in 2007 and reach the CFL final against the Alouettes the last two years.
Jones, 29, has appeared in 99 career CFL games, registering 22 sacks and returning three of his six fumble recoveries for touchdowns. He spent the 2009 season with Edmonton.
“Adding Cobb and Jones into the mix brings us the experience, leadership, and knowledge to compete as we head to camp,” Alouettes GM Jim Popp said in a statement. “The Alouettes welcome both players and are looking forward to them helping us continue our success both on the field and in the community.”
