EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos and Montreal Alouettes have reached agreement on a trade that has former Als first round draft pick Dylan Steenbergen returning to his native Alberta in exchange for two future draft picks.
Steenbergen, a 6-5 285 pound offensive lineman, was the seventh overall player selected in the 2009 CFL draft. After growing up in Lethbridge, he attended the University of Calgary where he was a Canada West all-star.
In addition to the 24-year-old former Dino, the Eskimos will also receive the future negotiation list rights to an undisclosed American prospect. In return, the Alouettes will receive a sixth round pick from the Eskimos in 2012, and another sixth round pick in 2013.
“We are delighted to welcome Dylan to our football family,” said Edmonton GM Eric Tillman. “He comes from an excellent organization, with tremendous talent, where his playing time has been limited.
“That said, we certainly believe in his potential, and view Dylan’s addition as another step in our commitment to build a strong, young Canadian nucleus. We know he’s excited to be coming back home, and we’re certainly very pleased to afford Dylan this special opportunity.”
The Eskimos started the season 5-0 and only allowed 10 sacks in the five wins. However, Edmonton has dropped the past three games while giving up a total of 18 sacks including eight sacks in an embarrassing home loss to the B.C. Lions this past week.
Steenbergen was the 2006 team nominee for the CIS J.P. Metras trophy as lineman of the year at the University of Calgary.
