REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders cut ties with Barrin Simpson on Tuesday.
The veteran linebacker had 67 tackles and five sacks in 2011 as the Riders stumbled to a 5-13 record to miss the playoffs.
In 11 CFL seasons with B.C., Winnipeg and Saskatchewan, the 34-year-old import had 954 tackles, 37 sacks and 10 interceptions.
Simpson was named the CFL’s outstanding rookie and the West Division defensive player of the year in 2001, and the East Division defensive player of the year in 2006.
In another move Tuesday, the Roughriders announced they have signed linebacker Maurice Lloyd to the roster.
Lloyd spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos. In 72 regular season CFL games the 28-year-old has 320 tackles, 12 quarterback sacks, six forced fumbles and three interceptions.
Lloyd originally signed with the Riders as a free agent in May 2006 and was a member of the Saskatchewan team that won the 2007 Grey Cup.
