WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have acquired import punter Eric Wilbur in a trade with the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for a conditional sixth round pick in the 2013 CFL Draft.
“Eric provides our team with depth at the kicking positions, specifically punting and kickoffs,” said Vice-President and General Manager Joe Mack. “He will provide great competition for our young kickers in camp.”
Wilbur (6-2, 200, Florida, DOB: December 12, 1984 in Orlando, Florida) spent the 2010 season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, appearing in 13 games and punting 85 times for 3,651 yards for a 43.0 yard average. He also averaged 57.5 yards on 25 kickoffs that season. Wilbur attended training camp with the TiCats last season but was among the team’s final cuts. He spent the 2011 season with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League before signing with the Eskimos earlier this month.
Wilbur played four seasons at Florida where he averaged 42.9 yards on 231 punts over his career. His 44.8 yard average as a freshman in 2003 was the second-best season average in Florida history and helped him get named to the SEC All-Freshman team. Upon graduation, Wilbur spent time with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets.
