CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders have signed import defensive lineman Anwar Stewart to a practice-roster agreement.

Stewart originally signed with the Stampeders in 2000 and was a member of the organization in 2001 when Calgary won the Grey Cup. He signed with Montreal in 2002 and played 10 seasons with the Alouettes, winning three more Grey Cups and becoming the franchise’s all-time sacks leader in 2009.
In 176 career regular-season games, Stewart has 284 tackles, including 29 tackles for loss, 30 special-teams tackles, 66 sacks, 10 interceptions, 15 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries. He has played 18 playoff games — including seven Grey Cup contests — and recorded 28 tackles and five sacks.

Stewart was an East Division all-star in 2003, 2004 and 2009, a CFL all-star in 2004 and 2009 and was the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2004.

Prior to turning pro, he went to the University of Kentucky and played linebacker before making the switch to defensive end.
