CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders announced a trio of moves Tuesday, signing import receiver Terence Jeffers-Harris and rookie linebacker Demetri Stewart. They also released import defensive lineman Chris McCoy — who was eligible for free agency on Feb. 15 — in order to allow him to sign a contract with the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles.
Jeffers-Harris has played 23 career games in the CFL over three seasons including two years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and one with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He had 83 career receptions for 1,012 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2010 with Winnipeg, he had 48 catches for 547 yards and four touchdowns including a game against Toronto in which he registered a career-high 152 yards and two touchdowns.
“Terence has shown that he is a capable CFL receiver and I look forward to seeing how he performs at training camp,” said Hufnagel.
The 24-year-old San Diego native played collegiately at Connecticut, where he was a teammate of Stampeders kick returner-receiver Larry Taylor, before transferring to Vanderbilt. In two seasons at Connecticut, he amassed 61 catches for 782 yards and seven touchdowns.
Stewart is a six-foot-three, 255-pound linebacker who played at Northern Michigan University after transferring from Miami. He started 11 games at Northern Michigan in 2011 and recorded 53 tackles, including seventackles for loss, two sacks and one interception. In 2009, he earned all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honourable mention after a seasonthat featured 65 tackles, including nine tackles for loss, four sacks, three pass breakups and three forced fumbles.
