WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced via their official Twitter account that QB Justin Goltz will make his first career start in their Week 5 battle against the Calgary Stampeders.

Goltz, 25, will step in under centre as a result of an abdominal injury to starter Buck Pierce, suffered in last week’s loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

The Occidental College product has been taking first team reps all week long, preparing as though he would be named starter.

“I’m preparing as if I’m going to start, trying to build off the momentum of last week,” Goltz said after practice Monday, when he took first-team reps and Pierce mostly stood around.

“You never know what the situation’s going to be … As long as I prepare as if I’m going to start, I can’t go wrong.”

Goltz played the entire second half and completed 13 of 15 throws for 170 yards. He was at the helm for Winnipeg’s only touchdown of the game, a run by Chad Simpson late in the fourth quarter.

Goltz has also been used in short-yardage situations, running 11 times for 31 yards and two touchdowns.
