CALGARY — Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel announced Thursday the re-signing of non-import long-snapper Randy Chevrier. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Chevrier, who had been eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 15, played all 18 regular-season games for the Stampeders in 2013. He went the entire season without making an errant snap and added nine special-teams tackles. He also played in the Western Final.
By remaining with the Stamps, Chevrier will join the select group of players who have played a decade with the Red and White. With his first appearance of the 2014 season, Chevrier would become the 23rd member of that club, joining current teammate Nik Lewis. Chevrier has played in 157 career games with the Stamps, putting him within 15 games of the top 10 in franchise history.
“Randy has always been a reliable performer at one of the more underrated roles on a football team,” said Hufnagel. “In addition to his important work on special teams, his work ethic and experience makes him one of our leaders in the locker room.”
Chevrier joined the Stampeders in 2005 after two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos as well as stints in the National Football League and NFL Europe. In addition to long-snapping, he has served as an offensive linenman, a defensive lineman and a fullback during his career in Calgary.
“I’m excited to be remaining with the Calgary Stampeders,” said Chevrier, a 37-year-old Montreal native. “Working with Rene Paredes, Rob Maver, Bo Levi Mitchell and Coach Mark Kilam has been one of the best experiences of my career. I think this team has an excellent chance to win it all and I’m looking forward to getting back on the road to the Grey Cup.”
