WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released non-import linebacker Henoc Muamba so he can pursue NFL opportunities.

“Henoc is a great player, and an even better person. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers wish him the best in his pursuit of employment in the National Football League, and sincerely thank him for his contributions, both on and off the field, with our organization,” said General Manager Kyle Walters.

The announcement comes less than a week after the Saskatchewan Roughriders granted Weston Dressler his release for a similar opportunity South of the Border.

Muamba, 24, was slated to become a free agent on February 11.

Selected first overall in the 2011 CFL Draft, Muamba has quickly established himself as one of the league’s most elite defensive players. Last season saw the St. Francis Xavier native register career highs in tackles with 106, and collect his first career interception.

In three CFL seasons, Muamba has collected 171 tackles, four sacks, one interception and one touchdown.
