As the May 10 CFL Draft draws near, CFL.ca goes one-on-one with some of the top amateur football prospects in the country eligible to be drafted. Today we hear from Toronto native and Southern University graduate Mike Jones.

TORONTO — His dad a college football player and his mother a strength and conditioning coach, you just knew Mike Jones was going to be an athlete.

One of the fastest players in the upcoming draft, the Southern University graduate is an intriguing prospect.

“Growing up as a kid and my mom being a strength and conditioning coach, my discipline wasn’t the same as any of the other kids,” recalled Jones. “Any type of exercise you can think of I probably did as punishment.”

Jones moved all across the country growing up as his mother took on jobs at different schools while he continued perfecting his craft as a football player. After going to high school in Texas, Jones wound up at Southern University.

Now, the Toronto native imagines himself playing pro football one day:

Jones, 5-foot-11, 178 pounds, put his talents on display at the CFL Combine this year, posting a 4.606 in the 40 and a 4.34 in the shuttle. All that’s left now is to wait an anticipation for one team to call his name on draft day.
