HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have acquired international defensive back Johnny Adams from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in exchange for the rights to a player on the Bombers’ negotiation list.
Adams, 27, has appeared in five games with Winnipeg this season, registering 21 defensive tackles, five special teams tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. In his rookie CFL season in 2015, the 5-11, 190-pound cornerback was named a West Division All-Star after finishing tied for first in the league with six interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown on July 10 against the Montreal Alouettes. Adams also ranked fourth in the CFL with nine pass knockdowns, while tallying 64 defensive tackles in 18 games.
In 2013, the native of Akron, Ohio, suited up in four games with the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills. He also spent time with the Houston Texans (2013), Indianapolis Colts (2013, 2014), and Oakland Raiders (2013-14) before signing with the Blue Bombers on February 6, 2015.
Adams played 54 games, including 39 starts at cornerback, for the Michigan State Spartans from 2008 to 2012. He registered 157 career tackles, 11 interceptions and had 24 pass break ups with the Spartans. The four-year letterwinner was also a three-time All-Big Ten selection (2010, 2011, 2012).
