REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced Wednesday that the team has agreed to terms on a new contract with national saftey Mike Edem through the 2018 season.
The Riders recently acquired the 27-year-old Edem and a conditional selection in the 2018 CFL Draft from the BC Lions. In exchange, the Riders sent a conditional 2018 pick to the Lions.
Edem joined the Lions last season after starting his career in Montreal and taking on a brief stint in Hamilton. He had 37 defensive tackles and two interceptions in 2016.
Edem was originally selected by the Montreal Alouettes with the third overall pick in the 2013 CFL Draft. He appeared in 35 games during his first two seasons with the Als notching 54 tackles, five sacks and four interceptions. The lofty numbers earned him an East Division All-Star nod in 2013 as well as Montreal’s nominee as Outstanding Canadian and Outstanding Rookie. He began the 2015 season with the Alouettes and appeared in four games before being traded to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in October where he played in an additional four games and two playoff tilts.
He was named a 2013 East Division All-Star and receives nomination as the Alouettes’ Most Outstanding Rookie.
