YOU asked, we listened, I lifted!

Back in February we started a Brodie OT series where I worked out with CFL players so you could get a sense of what their workouts look like in the off season! I knew you wanted to see player workouts (I heard you loud and clear!) but I didn’t just want to shoot what they were doing because we expect these guys to be elite lifters and jumpers who are also agile and fast, I wanted to give you a means of comparison. I determined I could be the means of comparison and these videos evolved to players putting me through their off-season workouts – no adjustments, no faking, the real deal.

After workouts with Chad Owens, Henoc and Kelvin Muamba and Ricky Foley we seemed to have done something right because you LOVED it  and so did the players. I was flooded with messages asking when/if I could come check out their workout, but one voice stood out on Twitter…can you guess who?

During our Off-Season/On-Record interview Bo was pretty adamant I find a way out to Calgary and suggested we get some buzz going on Twitter. You tweeted, shared, re-tweeted and got me on a plane to YYC!  I joined Bo Levi Mitchell, Alex Singleton and Deron Mayo at the Canadian Sport Institute, a state of the art Olympic training centre. These guys are getting ready for camp and were already helping out with rookie camp, so they REALLY went out of their way to accommodate and welcome me for which I am so grateful.

For the workout the guys planned a really tough circuit with cycling, cleans, sleds and more, the Brodie OT is coming soon with the whole session. We used some really bizarre equipment which was frankly refreshing and pushed me big-time. I used to be a a decent downhill ski racer, so the guys picked some ski specific elements like the photo below which helps skiers with their starts. Needless to say it took some…practice.  I was reminded, as I am every time I do these workouts, just what amazing teammates these players are. They encouraged me, corrected my form, cheered me on and challenged me big time.

The best moment for me was the box jump (screen cap below) I jumped 36 inches which is a personal best!!! I honestly could not believe I made it, but Bo, Alex and Deron could. See what I mean? Great teammates.  The whole video is coming out on Brodie OT next week, so please stay tuned! I wanted to give you all a little preview and send a BIG thank you for your awesome tweets and instagram comments! I hope next off-season we can do more of these, so comment on my Instagram or Tweet me @BrodieLawson for both and let me know who you’d maybe like to see next season.
