TMI: The moment Bo Levi Mitchell ‘grew up as a QB’

There was an exact moment that Bo Levi Mitchell felt he had grown up as a quarterback.

It was while he was attending Eastern Washington University – the year that he and his teammates became National Champions.

The game was literally in Bo’s hands as the clock ticked down. He moved his team down the field, and through the snow, making three fourth down passes setting up the game-tying score to send things to over time.

Intense right?

What’s on Bo’s pregame playlist, what super power would he want to have and which teammate does he and his wife spend a lot of time with off of the field?

Find out the answers to these questions, and more, in this edition of TMI!

Kristina Costabile: Tell me something fans might not know about you.

Bo Levi Mitchell: I’m an avid baseball fan. I played my entire life. It’s something I did all the way through high school. I wanted to go to a college with football and baseball. But the school I decided to commit to didn’t have baseball so I stuck to football and it ended up being a good decision.

KC: Do you follow any MLB teams?

BLM: Oh yeah, Houston Astros, number one in the MLB right now by like seven games! And they scored 17 runs this afternoon (Editors note: This was at the time of my conversation with Bo on May 31). I’ve been a fan of the Astros since I was a baby. I’ve got all of the clothes and everything.

KC: When you’re not busy with football or spending time with your daughter, Ele, what do you like to do in your free time?

BLM: Really anything competitive. Me and (Duron) Mayo are close friends and we live close to each other. His wife and my wife are very good friends. We both have very young babies right now. He comes over and I go over to his place and it’s anything from darts to video games to Dutch Blitz, Settlers of Katan. Honestly any kind of board game, video game or anything competitive with him and my wife. All four of us get together and have a little date night and it’s a lot of fun.

KC: What is on your pregame playlist?

BLM: Chance the Rapper, Chris Stapleton. It’s really those two and any kind of rap whether it’s Drake or Future or any body like that. It’s just something to get the energy going.

KC: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring with you?

BLM: Deck of cards, sand wedge (golf club), and an iPhone with unlimited data that happens to have cell service?!

KC: If you weren’t playing football, what would you be doing?

BLM: I would say golf. Golf is something I’m pretty passionate about. Golf’s been something I’ve been doing a lot. Just going out with teammates having a couple pops, swinging away and having fun. I think I’d take the (Tony) Romo route and try and become pro after I’m done.

KC: What is your favourite football memory?

BLM: I’d have to say 2010, it was the semi-final or quarter-final game but it was the versus North Dakota State. We were down by eight, we had to get a touchdown and a two-point conversion to go into over time. So we’re down by eight, we’re on the 10 yard line. We had three fourth downs so we almost gave it up three different times in that drive with a minute and 10 seconds left. That was the moment that I felt like I grew up as a quarterback. I learned to slow everything down, finish it off, finish every throw, be very conscious of what I was doing with the football. This was my first snowy game so it was pretty intense. I completed three, fourth down passes, got in the end zone, completed the two-point conversion. We scored the first play of over time and they fumbled it and it propelled us going onto the National Championship game. Same thing there, we came back from 19-0 with six seconds left in the fourth quarter to come back and become National Champions. That was pretty special because there are a lot of teams in college so it’s very, very hard to get to that point so that was definitely one of my favourite memories.

KC: Do you have any superstitions or routines that you have to do before a game?

BLM: I don’t have any hard, concrete ones… well actually I do! My wife, no matter what, every game day at home, makes me and egg sandwich. She fries eggs and puts it on some toast for me and I have a little bit of fruit. That’s what I eat no matter what every game day at home. That’s really the only one. Every now and then, if I have a decent game I might change one thing up and if I have a great game I might keep it the same.

KC: What are you watching on Netflix right now?

BLM: We were on Gotham, I think we just finished, we might have two or three episodes left. Obviously Game of Thrones!

KC: If you could have any super power, what would it be?

BLM: Probably memory. My least favourite thing is when someone says something and you’re like, ‘Oh, you meant this.’ And they’re like, ‘that’s what I said!’ and you’re like, ‘no you didn’t.’ And I wish I could go back in time three seconds so you understand. It’s not a big deal and it doesn’t really matter but I’m just the kind of person that’s like, ‘I think you meant to say this!’ Perfect memory would help with football too.
