Stamps get D-line help in Whiteside

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders have added veteran international defensive lineman Aston Whiteside to their practice roster.

Whiteside has 43 games of CFL experience over three seasons including one season with the Toronto Argonauts (2014) and two with the Ottawa REDBLACKS (2015-16). He has 43 career defensive tackles including five tackles for loss as well as 12 sacks, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, one special-teams tackle and two knockdowns.

He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys in 2012 and has spent time on the practice rosters of the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals.

In college, Whiteside played 48 games over four seasons at Abilene Christian. He was first-team all-Lone Conference as a senior in 2011 and was named the conference’s defensive player and defensive lineman of the year. He was Lone Star Conference South Division’s defensive lineman of the year in both 2008 and 2010 and was the South’s freshman of the year in 2008.

For his career with the Wildcats, Whiteside accumulated 133 total tackles including 58.5 tackles for loss, 31.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, one interception and nine pass breakups.
