Week 3 Fantasy Recap: Argonaut bargains pay off

The Canadian Press

Gambling on Kevin Glenn paid off handsomely in Week 3, as Fantasy owners who took advantage of the Saskatchewan pivot and his $8,968 salary saw it pay off with 380 passing yards and two majors along with two rushing touchdowns. He was clearly the best bargain at the position, yet wasn’t the only player whose low-end price resulted in quality numbers.

After letting owners down in Week 2, Toronto slot S.J. Green ($4,090) produced one of the best games of his career, burning Ottawa with a career-best 242 yards and a touchdown on ten catches in the Argonauts’ 26-25 shocker in the back yard of the defending Grey Cup champions. Green, who was ranked in the Top 5 in Week 2, easily outproduced the likes of salary letdowns Emmanuel Arceneaux ($7,650), Weston Dressler ($6,157) and Luke Tasker ($5,922), the latter of whom did not record a catch in Hamilton’s loss at Saskatchewan.

Fantasy players who picked Kevin Glenn in Week 3 were in for a treat as the pivot tossed 380 yards and two majors while also finding the end zone twice on the ground.

Green’s teammate, DeVier Posey ($4,488), was also a bargain. With a salary ranked 20th, Posey had seven catches for 62 yards and a touchdown (the 300th in quarterback Ricky Ray’s career) in the victory over the REDBLACKS. He and Green were targeted a combined 29 times by Ray, the type of rate that will make the duo sought after heading into Week 4.

Calgary’s Kamar Jorden ($4763) found the end zone twice in the Stampeders’ win over Winnipeg, giving him five touchdowns (four receiving, one rushing) in the first three games. Jorden’s salary was 18th entering last week and while he was ranked 11th, the potential breakout star is a lock to crack the Top 5 entering Week 4. Even with the return of DaVaris Daniels, Jorden has established himself as a go-to option for quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, assuring him of solid numbers.

On the flipside of matters, Alouettes wideout Ernest Jackson continues to struggle, making his $5,958 salary difficult to add to Fantasy rosters. The free-agent acquisition from Ottawa does have a touchdown thus far, but Jackson has only seven catches for a paltry 67 yards. Four of those receptions accounted for 48 yards in Montreal’s loss to BC on Thursday night. With the Als’ offence last in scoring and near the bottom in most passing categories, the risk will remain high when it comes to investing in Jackson or any of the Montreal receivers. Quarterback Darian Durant’s salary was at $9,521 entering Week 3, yet his lack of production has had a domino effect on what was supposed to have been a vastly improved unit.

However, Alouettes running back Tyrell Sutton offers a source of production. The league’s leading rusher has been a solid RB2 and ran for his first touchdown of the season in Week 3. Playing him at $5,525 would have also given Fantasy owners a reasonable jolt in pass catching numbers, as Sutton pulled in four receptions in the setback to the Lions.

Winnipeg pivot Matt Nichols was one of the bigger Week 3 disappointments. Following a four-touchdown effort in the Blue Bombers’ season opening win over the Roughriders, Nichols ($10,726) looked primed to duel Mitchell in a potential shootout, yet fizzled with just a touchdown and a pair of interceptions in the loss to Calgary. The ripple effect of Nichols’ numbers was felt in the Winnipeg receiving corps, namely Darvin Adams, who managed just 47 yards on five catches. At $7,236, Adams had the second-highest salary entering the week, trailing only BC’s Emmanuel Arceneaux, whose $7,650 salary led to only 48 yards on six catches in the Lions’ victory over the Alouettes.
