CFL.ca writers make their picks for Week 6

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

TORONTO — The CFL Pick ‘Em world bounced back in a big way in Week 5, including four of our writers with a perfect 5-0 record.

Ottawa, Edmonton, BC, Calgary and Toronto were the big winners while every writer is now above .500 — including Pat Steinberg with his sterling 16-4 mark.

With only two days between weeks, there’s little time to rest. Week 6 kicks off Thursday and with that, we’re back at it with this week’s writer picks.

CFL Pick ‘Em is back in 2017 with more than $130,000 in combined cash and prizes are up for grabs*. Pick 30 in a row, win $30,000; pick 40, win $40,000; think you can pick 50 straight? You’re looking at $50,000. *View rules regarding streaks and prizing.

MTL @ WPG

The Alouettes may have deserved better in their Week 5 meeting with Ottawa but costly mistakes (including five turnovers) stood in their way. The same could be said for the Bombers as the new week opens with two teams looking to bounce back from heartbreaking late-game defeat.

Home field will be important for the Bombers and the battle between Montreal’s rushing attack and Winnipeg’s run defence — both ranked top of the league — could very well make the difference.

Jason Maas isn’t sugar-coating it: Friday’s matchup between the 4-1 Lions and 4-0 Eskimos is as big as it gets this early in a Canadian Football League season. Both teams have won four in a row while the only loss between them came in head-to-head play, when the Eskimos took down the Lions in Week 1.

While the Eskimos have been formidable in the face of adversity, the Lions have leaned on the throwing arm of 2011 Most Outstanding Player Travis Lulay. For someone, the good early-season fortune has to change.

Two central themes will unfold on Saturday evening at Mosaic: The 1-3 Riders need a win — badly — while the same can be said for former Riders head coach Corey Chamblin, who’s now in charge of the Argo defence. Then there’s the battle between two ageless quarterbacks in Ricky Ray and Kevin Glenn.

The Argos are 3-2 and boast the CFL’s top passing attack (379.2 yards per game) and on Saturday search for their first win of the season outside the East Division. The Riders need a win to keep pace in the highly-competitive West.

After leading almost the entire game, the Ticats let one slip away vs. the Eskimos thanks to some last-minute heroics from Mike Reilly. Win No. 1 won’t come any easier in the next two weeks with back to back visits to Calgary and Edmonton.

The Stampeders, meanwhile, will be happy to remain at home for the second straight week after brushing off the Saskatchewan Roughriders to move to 3-1-1. It’s a wild race in the West and the Stamps need every point they can get — and you can be sure they won’t take anyone, including 0-4 Hamilton, for granted.

Writers: 87% Calgary
