Week 6 Fantasy Recap: Glenn, Carter power offensive outburst

Matt Smith/CFL.ca

There’s still magic in the arm of Kevin Glenn, as last week’s win over Toronto displayed to Fantasy owners. A week after hitting the 50,000-yard mark in an otherwise lackluster effort against Calgary in Week 5, the Saskatchewan magician conjured up a withering series of spells on the Argonauts’ secondary, accounting for 340 yards and four touchdowns on the way to a total of 29.6 Fantasy Points that topped the pack in Week 6.

The week’s second-best effort resided across the field from Glenn as Toronto’s Ricky Ray finished with 27.4 points, just ahead of the 26.8 FP that Calgary running back Jerome Messam tallied in the Stampeders’ 60-1 win over Hamilton. Ray threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns despite losing 38-27, while Messam’s 13 carries and 91 yards included three touchdowns to help Calgary pull off the third largest margin of victory in league history.

Messam has been on a tear over the last two weeks, leading all running backs with 46.1 Fantasy points, while at the same time coming in negative in receiving (-0.2 FP).

In what was his best game with the Roughriders, receiver Duron Carter delivered for Fantasy owners who took a chance on the then-slumping Saskatchewan standout. While his one-handed touchdown catch late in the first half burned up social media, it was just one of Carter’s nine catches for 131 yards and two majors, giving him 25.1 Fantasy points. Carter’s Fantasy production was just behind the all-around performance of Winnipeg’s Andrew Harris, who stepped up huge for both the Blue Bombers and Fantasy owners.

Harris had just 41 yards on 12 carries but scored twice, including the game-winner on the final play that carried the Bombers to a heart-stopping 41-40 win over the Alouettes. His 25.4 FP was bolstered by his pass-catching prowess, as he went 9-for-9 with 93 yards receiving, good for 9.3 Fantasy points. Over the last two weeks, Harris has 17.8 of his FP coming from his role as Matt Nichols’ primary safety valve, the result of 21 catches for 178 yards.

On the other side of the coin, those hoping for a big night of pitch and catch from the Calgary duo Bo Levi Mitchell and Kamar Jorden were left disappointed. Mitchell put up just 11.9 Fantasy points, sitting out the second half after taking the Stamps to a 39-1 halftime lead. Jorden left with a lower body injury in the first half, with just one reception for six yards. Mitchell enters the Week 7 game against Toronto with four straight games of less than 20 FP, while Jorden (who is expected to play) has not scored a major in three consecutive contests, after scoring five in the first three.

Like Jorden, Edmonton running back Travon Van left early due to injury as the Eskimos’ top ground gainer suffered an upper body injury in the win over BC. Without Van (who accounted for just 14 all-purpose yards), a team that has lost two other backs thus far (John White and Kendial Lawrence) were left to go with veteran fullback Calvin McCarty, who finished with 45 yards on 11 carries. Winnipeg receiver Weston Dressler didn’t fare much better, leaving the win over Montreal with an injury and only 2.4 FP.
