Argos to update Ray’s injured shoulder on Sunday

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts are expected to provide an update on Ricky Ray’s injured shoulder on Sunday.

Ray left Thursday night’s 41-24 loss to Calgary in the third quarter with a shoulder injury after taking a hit from Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman James Vaughters.

The veteran pivot was spotted on the sidelines attempting to throw a ball but was in visible pain. Cody Fajardo stepped in for Ray for the rest of the contest while Ray finished the night 15-of-26 for 139 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

“I think he’s in a good place, we’ll wait and see [Friday],” Head Coach Marc Trestman said following the game. “I can’t speak for him and how he feels. It’s a wait-and-see and we’ve got to keep our fingers crossed and see where he’s at in the next couple of days.

“He was sore and couldn’t really complete the throwing motion. He wasn’t in a great amount of pain but enough that it would inhibit his throwing.”

After falling to 3-4, the Argos are back in action on Aug. 11 vs. the Alouettes. If Ray is unavailable, Fajardo is expected to make his first career professional start. Fajardo completed six of 11 passing attempts for 75 yards and also flashed his ability as a rusher, taking off eight times for 55 yards and a touchdown.

“He does give us some mobility and some out of the pocket ability to extend plays with his feet and with his speed. I think you saw that [on Thursday night]. He just ran off the game play and made some plays, extended some plays when he had the opportunity to do that.”

Ray, 37, was in the midst of a career renaissance in his 15th season and sixth with the Argos, leading the CFL with 2,421 passing yards and 10 touchdowns against four interceptions.
