RotoExperts: Week 9 Fantasy Rankings

The Canadian Press

Injuries and uncertainty — especially at quarterback — take the wheel of the Week 9 rankings, as season-long fixtures like Toronto pivot Ricky Ray ($9,352), Edmonton receiver Brandon Zylstra ($4,534) and BC receiver Nick Moore ($4,088) are on the outside looking in due to ailments that sidelined each of them in Week 8.

Jonathon Jennings‘ return to the lineup, which resulted in four interceptions in BC’s 41-8 loss at Saskatchewan on Sunday night, might lead to another debate as to whether Jennings ($9,006) or Travis Lulay ($10,779) will get the start in Friday’s critical matchup against Calgary. Ray’s status remains unclear entering the week after he missed the loss at Montreal, which could leave coach Marc Trestman deciding whether to go with Jeff Mathews ($5,094) or Cody Fajardo ($5,000) after neither was able to lead the Argonauts on a touchdown drive during the 21-9 loss.

Stampeders’ running back Jerome Messam ($7,929) has the highest salary at the position and comes off an open week refreshed to take on the Lions’ defence. Messam had five touchdowns in his last three games entering the bye and looks to pick up where he left off. Andrew Harris ($7,877) had his first 100-yard rushing effort in the win over Hamilton, as the Winnipeg star remains the best dual-threat back in the league. Mossis Madu ($6,536) enters the week as the projected starter for Ottawa leading into their contest at Hamilton, yet the health of William Powell ($5,591) will determine the final decision.

A healthy Zylstra would be a solid WR2, yet the Eskimos won’t know until later in the week whether the second-year standout will resume his breakout campaign. Moore, who sustained a back injury on Sunday night, could miss the contest against the Stamps, but the Lions are optimistic that Bryan Burnham ($5,567) will return to the lineup after a foot injury caused him to be scratched at Saskatchewan. The fate of Toronto’s receiving corps hinges on a healthy Ray. If either Mathews or Fajardo get the start, then the Argos’ passing game — which failed to produce a play longer than 13 yards in Week 8 — could suffer a similar fate this week.

After allowing a combined 35 points in their last three games before the open week, Calgary’s defence ($6,606) leads the pack in salary, but the Alouettes ($4,235), who could dodge Ray for a second straight week, are the best play for Week 9.
