Weekly Insights: Record gains for the Riders

TORONTO — All in the work of a single game, Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Ed Gainey went from the bottom of the CFL interceptions chart to the top.

In helping the Riders to a 41-8 victory, Gainey hauled in four interceptions and recovered a fumble. The 27-year-old’s outing on Sunday night vs. the BC Lions was as rare as a solar eclipse, setting a new franchise record while falling one pick shy of the league’s all-time single-game benchmark.

In this week’s CFL Insights presented by PWC, we take a look at Gainey’s historic evening:

After going from Montreal to Hamilton early in his career, Gainey joined Chris Jones and the Riders as a free agent in 2016 and emerged as a veteran leader on a young up-and-coming defence.

In his first year wearing green, Gainey played 17 games and recorded 49 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a touchdown. And now, after everything went his way on Sunday, Gainey is on pace for a career season across the board through seven games in 2017.

Gainey and the Riders will have to wait another week to continue their surge as they visit the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium.
