Checking Down: Gable out in Week 14?

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — With Jamaal Westerman out for the year, could the Bombers bring in former second overall pick Andy Mulumba?

Plus, the CFL quarterback shuffle continues with eyes on Ottawa, Montreal and Saskatchewan this week.

Finally, are the Riders have some big names back at practice this week.

We check on the latest in this week’s Checking Down as Week 14 gets under way Friday:

Jump to team:

BC | Calgary | Edmonton | Saskatchewan | Winnipeg | Hamilton | Toronto | Ottawa | Montreal

BC LIONS

– Lions linebacker Micah Awe says there was no ill will behind his questionable hits vs. the Stampeders in Week 13 (Farhan Lalji, TSN).

– With only 18 sacks through 12 games this season, the Lions are hoping Alex Bazzie can provide a major boost to their pass rush (Lowell Ullrich, TSN).

– The Lions could be making another change to their O-line, with Kelvin Palmer set to move over to right tackle (Giulio Caravatta, TSN).

– While ‘Team 100’ has been split up, Adam Bighill and Solomon Elimimian are still keeping tabs on each other (CFL.ca).

EDMONTON ESKIMOS

For Derel Walker, the decision to re-sign with Edmonton this month was an easy one (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

– With Sean Whyte still sidelined, the Eskimos have added former seventh round pick Brett Lauther, according to a report (Justin Dunk, 3 Down Nation).

– While every CFL team reportedly showed interest in Derel Walker following his NFL release, a return to the Eskimos was an easy choice (Esks.com).

CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Roy Finch has put up the best punt return numbers in the CFL in 2017 (Jimmy Jeong/CFL.ca)

– If the Stampeders have mirrored the success of the NFL’s New England Patriots, it’s for more than just their success on the field (Ted Wyman, Winnipeg Sun).

– Most recently crossing the 1,000-yard mark on punt returns, Roy Finch and his three return TDs this season are in a league of their own (Ty Pilson, Stampeders.com).

– While Eric Rogers isn’t giving up on his NFL dreams, a return to the Stampeders could be a fall-back (Justin Dunk, 3 Down Nation).

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

The Riders hope to have Kevin Glenn back under centre in Week 14 (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

– Kevin Glenn, Duron Carter, Otha Foster, Marcus Thigpen and Brendon LaBatte returned to practice for the Riders on Wednesday (Taylor Shire, Global Regina).

– The Riders have officially signed Elie Bouka and Jacoby Ford, while also bringing Marc-Olivier Brouillette out of retirement (CFL.ca).

– While the Riders will provide an update on Wednesday, Brandon Bridge says he expects Kevin Glenn to be back under centre for the Riders’ Week 14 matchup (Rod Pedersen, CKRM).

– Ed Gainey and his league-leading eight interceptions have joined the conversation for Most Outstanding Player (CFL.ca).

WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

– Following his season-ending injury, Bombers defensive end Jamaal Westerman is staying positive and doing what he can to help his team (Ed Tait, BlueBombers.com).

– Despite recent speculation, the Bombers will reportedly not pursue released linebacker Khalil Bass (Ted Wyman, Winnipeg Sun).

– Former Bombers draft pick Andy Mulumba could be Winnipeg-bound after being released from the NFL (Mike Sawatzky, Winnipeg Free Press).

– The Bombers have released rookie receiver T.J. Thorpe, the team announced Wednesday (CFL.ca).

– A concerted effort to improve his running ability this off-season has paid off for Matt Nichols, who’s on his way to career highs on the ground (Jeff Hamilton, Winnipeg Free Press).

HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

– The Ticats are starting to get some key nationals off their injured list, with linebacker Nick Shortill nearing a return along with defensive tackle Mike Atkinson, who both practised this week.

– C.J. Gable will reportedly miss this weekend’s game vs. BC with a shoulder injury (Drew Edwards, 3 Down Nation).

– At his first practice with the Ticats, recently-acquired Shamawd Chambers saw plenty of familiar faces (Chris O’Leary, CFL.ca).

– Ticats receiver Mike Jones has been suspended two games for violating the drug policy (CFL.ca).

– Andy Fantuz is back with the Ticats but appears to be ‘two or three weeks’ away from returning to the lineup (Steve Milton, The Hamilton Spectator).

TORONTO ARGONAUTS

James Wilder had the best game of his young career vs. the Eskimos (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

– For S.J. Green and Brian Tyms, football really is family. The two brother-in-laws are now teammates after Tyms was added last week (Mike Hogan, Argonauts.ca).

– When the Argos wanted to see what James Wilder Jr. could do with an opportunity, the rookie running back ran away with it (Mike Hogan, Argonauts.ca).

– A month after being released and then re-signing, Matt Black found vindication when he secured the game-winning sack vs. the Eskimos on Saturday (Mike Ganter, Toronto Sun).

OTTAWA REDBLACKS

The QB shuffle continues for the REDBLACKS, who now turn to Ryan Lindley under centre (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

– A week after releasing Khalil Bass, the REDBLACKS have added some linebacker depth in 28-year-old Greg Jones.

– After their most recent win, the REDBLACKS have almost assured themselves of a playoff spot according to the latest CFL Simulation (CFL.ca).

– Despite the REDBLACKS missing their top two quarterbacks, both Henry Burris and Marcel Desjardins have ruled out any chance of the retired pivot returning (Tim Baines, Ottawa Citizen).

– Drew Tate is expected to be in uniform for the REDBLACKS on Friday but will not start, according to a report (TSN).

MONTREAL ALOUETTES

The Alouettes will continue to roll with Darian Durant in Week 14 (Peter McCabe/CFL.ca)

– The Alouettes have added four new players to their practice roster, including former Argos offensive lineman and Oakland Raider Anthony Morris (MontrealAlouettes.com).

– Despite a ‘bad day’ from Darian Durant in Week 13, the Alouettes will stay the course at quarterback vs. the Argos on Saturday (Herb Zurkowsky, Montreal Gazette).

– The Als have added two new coaches to their staff in Kit Lathrop and Ken Miller (MontrealAlouettes.com).

– Left guard Philip Blake has returned to practice with the starters for the first time since getting injured on July 27 (Didier Orméjuste, RDS).
