Fantuz, Kanneh ready to return for Ticats

HAMILTON — The Ticats are getting some help in their sudden playoff pursuit, as Andy Fantuz and Abdul Kanneh are expected to start Saturday’s contest against the Argos.

Both are listed as starters in the team’s depth chart, which was released on Friday.

Fantuz suffered a season-ending injury last season, taking on a coaching role throughout most of 2017 while continuing his rehab. After being cleared to play, the 33-year-old signed a contract two weeks ago and has been practising since.

A 6-foot-4, 218-pound native of Chatham, Ont., Fantuz could pay dividends on a receiving corps that’s recently added Shamawd Chambers and gotten solid contributions from Brandon Banks, Luke Tasker and Jalen Saunders.

While Fantuz provides the offence a major boost, the return of Kanneh shakes up a secondary that was expected to be one of the CFL’s best in 2017. The high-profile free agent signing has barely played this season due to injury, registering one defensive tackle in one game.

Kanneh joined the Ticats as one of the league’s marquee free agents, months after winning a Grey Cup with the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Saturday’s game presents a significant opportunity for the Ticats in front of their home crowd, where they haven’t lost to the Argos since moving into new Tim Hortons Field. After an 0-8 start, the Ticats have won three of their last four and are six points back of the Argos and five back of the REDBLACKS in the East Division — with two games in hand on Ottawa.
