Week 17 Fantasy Recap: Receivers go off the hook

Week 17 wasn’t kind to pivots and running backs, but receivers had a banner week. In the end, though, it was Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly’s 23.8 Fantasy Points that helped carry the Eskimos to a playoff-clinching victory over Toronto and the highest score of the week.

Reilly threw for 309 yards and a touchdown, but it was his running that made the difference in attaining his score. His 28-yard touchdown run was the highlight of a three-carry, 34-yard outing with his legs that enabled him to put up his total.

Hamilton’s Jeremiah Masoli came close to hitting 20 FP, but he finished with 19.9 Fantasy Points behind a 326-yard performance in the air while rushing for 29 yards and a touchdown on eight carries in their loss to Calgary.

Despite being on the tail end of a 33-32 heartbreak to Ottawa on Friday, Saskatchewan receiver Duron Carter had perhaps the best game of his career with 11 catches for a personal-best 231 yards. That effort translated to 23.1 Fantasy points. He was one of two receivers to cross the 20 Fantasy Point barrier, as Toronto’s S.J. Green joined his former Alouettes teammate with a 21.9 FP performance in the Argonauts’ loss to the Eskimos on Saturday night.

Green, third in the league with 1,337 receiving yards, pulled in 13 passes for 159 yards and a major en route to his third game with at least 20 Fantasy Points this season, having achieved the feat previously in Week 3 (27) and Week 9 (26.5).

Five other receivers had double-digit totals, with BC’s Bryan Burnham putting up 15.2 Fantasy Points with his two late touchdowns in the Lions’ loss to the Blue Bombers, while Edmonton’s Brandon Zylstra’s 14.7 FP marked the sixth straight game the Eskimos’ sophomore sensation put up double-digit Fantasy output. Ottawa’s Diontae Spencer recorded a second consecutive game of high-end numbers with a 13.1 effort in the REDBLACKS’ playoff-clinching win over the Roughriders, while Hamilton’s Brandon Banks’ 12 Fantasy Points in the Ticats’ loss to the Stampeders was his fourth straight game of double-digits.

Eskimos running back C.J. Gable continued his October breakout, accounting for 18.6 Fantasy Points, as his 104 yards on the ground was the third straight week he eclipsed the 100-yard mark. Gable has five total touchdowns in his current stretch that has seen the former Tiger-Cats lead back total 372 rushing yards in two games against the Argonauts with a game against the Alouettes sandwiched in.

The back who replaced him in Hamilton, Alex Green, finished with 17.1 FP, as his two short touchdown runs bolstered his 47-yard outing.

The list of running backs who disappointed Fantasy players was led by Stampeders star Jerome Messam, whose six-carry, 11-yard effort totaled just 1.1 Fantasy Points. BC’s Jeremiah Johnson (6.7 FP), Ottawa’s William Powell (7.2 FP) and Winnipeg’s Andrew Harris (8.5 FP) left many a Fantasy team longing for better outings.

Toronto’s Ricky Ray threw for 362 yards and a touchdown, but finished with just 16.5 Fantasy Points, while Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell had just 13.5 FP in the Stamps’ last-second win over the Tiger-Cats. A pair of interceptions hampered the production of BC’s Jonathon Jennings, who threw for a pair of touchdowns in the loss to Winnipeg, finishing with 14.7 Fantasy Points.
