Nik Lewis closes the book on 14-year career

MONTREAL — After 14 years, it appears that Nik Lewis has called an end to his prolific Canadian Football League career.

Reports indicated throughout the week that Friday night’s game vs. Saskatchewan would be his last. Then, roughly an hour after a 37-12 loss to the Riders, Lewis confirmed as much on Twitter.

“Thanks everyone,” Lewis Tweeted. “Can’t wait for the book to come out on how I spent my last 4,877 days.”

Before Friday, Lewis hadn’t played since Sept. 23 vs. Toronto. In a trip to the new Mosaic Stadium, the 35-year-old hauled in three catches for 30 yards.

This season has been an up-and-down one for the Mineral Wells, Texas native. In August, Lewis became the CFL’s all-time receptions leader, hauling in 10 passes vs. Winnipeg to pass Geroy Simon. Meanwhile, the Als have lost 10 straight, struggling on their way to a 3-14 record with a last-place finish in sight.

In the end, though, Lewis will be remembered as one of the best receivers ever to play the game — and certainly the most unique. He finishes his career with 13,778 receiving yards and 1,051 receptions, going over the 1,000-yard mark in 10 different seasons.

While Lewis has made no indication of what, exactly, is next on the horizon for him, he has expressed an interest in both coaching and broadcasting. He’s also planning on opening a business in his home state of Texas.

The Alouettes play their final game of 2017 on Nov. 3 in Hamilton, which Lewis is not expected to play.
