Trestman retools coaching staff; brings Calvillo aboard

Johany Jutras

TORONTO — After some unsuspected change in the off-season, Toronto Argonauts head coach Marc Trestman has solidified his coaching staff the team announced Monday.

Offensively, the Boatmen have elevated Tommy Condell to offensive coordinator after spending last year as a receivers coach as he takes over for the recently-departed Marcus Brady.  Brady had been the Argonauts OC since 2013 and took a position with the Indianapolis Colts last month.

The Argos have also hired hall of fame quarterback Anthony Calvillo who will take on his first role with an organization other than the Montreal Alouettes in almost two decades.  After a decorated career in Montreal, Calvillo has spent the last three seasons as a part of the Alouettes offensive coaching staff but will now reunite with Trestman with whom he won two Grey Cups with as a player.

Upon Calvillo’s departure, Alouettes president and CEO Patrick Brown said, “As one of the greatest players to ever wear our franchise’s jersey, Anthony will always be part of the Alouettes’ family. I want to thank Anthony for his commitment and dedication to our team as a player and as a coach during the last three decades. The door will always be open for him to come back to the Alouettes’ nest.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Argos have promoted former linebackers coach Mike Archer to defensive coordinator following the departure of Corey Chamblin who has taken a leave from the club.

The remainder of the coaching staff looks like this:

Former Argos linebacker Kevin Eiben remains as the club’s special teams coach and the team has also re-hired former defensive coordinator Greg Quick to handle coaching the linebackers.

Quick returns to Toronto after previously serving as the team’s linebackers coach in 2010 and 2011. Since his first stint with the team, he has coached linebackers with the Alouettes (2014, 2016-17) and served as the defensive coordinator for Chamblin with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Quick brings 37 years of coaching experience to the Argos staff. Most notably, he operated as the head coach at the University of Chicago (1989-93), St. Norbert College (1994-98), and Concord University (2003-08). In six seasons in the CFL, Quick has coached two CFL All-Stars and five divisional All-Stars. During both stints with the Alouettes, he worked alongside Argos GM Jim Popp.
