TMI: Edmonton’s Derel Walker is just like us

Derel Walker is just like you and I.

I’m serious. When he’s not playing football or working out preparing for an upcoming season, he like to just hang out and binge watch some of his favourite TV shows. I think I can speak for all of us when I say, same, Derel, same.

What would the Esks receiver be doing if he wasn’t playing football? What’s on his pre-game playlist? And what super power would he have? Find out in this edition of TMI.

Kristina Costabile: What’s something that fans might not know about you?

Derel Walker: I’m just simple, really. I just like to watch TV and hang out with good people other than working out and stuff like that. I’m more into TV. I don’t do too much anymore. I like to watch TV all day.

KC: What are you watching right now?

DW: I watch The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Flash, Arrow. I watch so much, so many shows.

KC: What’s on your pre-game playlist?

DW: I don’t really have a pre-game playlist. It would probably be different week by week. New music drops all the time and I just try to keep up with whatever comes out. I just play whatever. I might play some Future, or something like that, before a game because you want up beat. You have to have Lil Wayne on there sometimes. I don’t really have a playlist, I just go through the music I have and find what I want to listen to at that point in time. I usually just pick an artist and just roll through the album. Or I just find a few songs I like. I’m never consistent with my pre-game, it’s just how I’m feeling that day.

KC: Do you have any pre-game superstitions or routines?

DW: Not too many. It’s just how I’m feeling in that point in time. There might be couple things but nothing comes to mind right now where it’s like, ‘okay, I have to do this.’ When it comes to my ankle taping job, when it comes to stuff to protect myself, I have to feel a certain way. I have to get my ankles taped and it can’t be too tight or other wise I won’t feel good running routes. Or if I have cleats on, if I wear these cleats and I go out there and run and I’m like, ‘dang, I don’t feel good with these on today’ I’ll probably take them off and switch them. It’s more along that line instead of, ‘I eat this, this and this before the game or I make sure I do this.’ There’s nothing really on schedule. I’m more of a go with the flow kind of guy.

KC: If you were not a football player, what would you be doing?

DW: I have no idea…. Probably coaching. I would say coaching, if anything.

KC: What’s your favourite football memory?

DW: I could think of plenty, I just need to think of which one I like the most (laughs). The one that pops into my mind the most is when we beat Alabama in Alabama in college when they were number one. We were the only team that beat them that year and they won the National Championship. It was a big deal.

KC: What is a guilty pleasure song that you listen to?

DW: I’ve got some country music on my phone. I listen to some country. I like Chris Stapleton. I switch out (my music) so much but if I was able to have my old mp3 player or whatever , that’s when I’d be like, ‘oh man, I have nothing but slow jams and stuff on that thing.’ It’s crazy. It would be embarrassing.

KC: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

DW: I’d want to fly. Or be the Flash and run super fast. Either or. Just throw it (the ball) and touchdown!
