CALGARY — Although no formal announcement has been made, former Calgary Stampeders receiver Marquay McDaniel says he’s retiring.

McDaniel told Danny Austin of the Calgary Herald that his playing days are over, and now he’s looking to transition as a coach:

McDaniel, 34, is coming off another productive season in which he caught 65 passes for 860 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Stampeders reach the Grey Cup for the second year in a row.

He’s been the model of consistency throughout his nine-year CFL career, totaling 680 yards or more in all but one season since arriving in 2009 with the Ticats. He won a Grey Cup with Calgary in 2014.

McDaniel was the centre of some controversy after last year’s Grey Cup loss, when he called out teammate Kamar Jorden for his fourth-quarter fumble vs. the Argos. However Head Coach Dave Dickenson said the two have talked and things have since been smoothed out.

McDaniel has spent six seasons with Calgary and in his career recorded 7,301 yards and 37 touchdowns in 130 games.

The Stampeders opened rookie camp on Wednesday and officially launched training camp on Sunday as the new season approaches.
