Eskimos release quarterback Eli Jenkins

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos still have a decision to make on their quarterback depth chart, but it will not involve Eli Jenkins after the team announced Monday he has been released.

Jenkins, 23, signed with the Eskimos this off-season and was expected to compete for the third-string job with Danny O’Brien and Zach Kline in camp this year. However, the Jacksonville State product attempted only two passes in pre-season play, going 2-of-3 for nine yards vs. Saskatchewan and Winnipeg.

In four years at Jacksonville State, the dual-threat quarterback threw for 7,652 yards, 47 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, churning up an impressive 3,796 more yards and 42 touchdowns with his legs.

Mike Reilly, coming off the best season of his career and his first Most Outstanding Player honour, is the Eskimos’ starting quarterback while the veteran Kevin Glenn has locked up the backup job.

There’s a chance both O’Brien and Kline stick around when the Eskimos open the season with a trip to Winnipeg on June 14.
