RotoExperts: CFL Week 6 Fantasy Rankings

Trevor Hagan, CFL.ca

TSN Fantasy CFL players need only $10,607 for a chance to be part of history in Week 6. That’s how much it will cost to plug Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli into the lineup as he seeks what would be a record-setting 10th straight game of at least 300 passing yards against the Roughriders on Thursday Night Football.

Masoli and the league’s most productive offence (447.5 yards per game) get a Saskatchewan pass defence that has allowed just four touchdowns via the friendly skies but is eighth in pass yards allowed per game at 292 yards. Paying for Masoli could put a crimp in a salary structure if the desire to add one of his receivers is part of the plan. Brandon Banks ($8,618), Luke Tasker ($6,933), Jalen Saunders ($6,095) and Terrence Toliver ($5,735) are among the priciest wideouts in Week 6, which means a considerable piece of the $40,000 salary cap will be placed in the hands of Hamilton’s passing game.

Although his Stamps are out to an undefeated record through five weeks of the CFL season, that hasn’t always translated into incredible stats for Bo Levi Mitchell, making him a bargain pick. (The Canadian Press)

Quarterback gets interesting after Masoli and Ottawa’s Trevor Harris ($8,346). Toronto’s James Franklin is due for a breakout game, and the Argos pivot comes with a reasonable $7,403 price tag at home against Winnipeg on Saturday afternoon. The status of Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell ($8,027) and Montreal’s Drew Willy ($6,296) are in question as the week begins, while the uncertainty at quarterback in Saskatchewan between Brandon Bridge ($5,079) and David Watford ($5,000) makes choosing a bargain a tough call.

There is no uncertainty atop the running back rankings, where Winnipeg’s Andrew Harris tops all non-quarterbacks with a $9,055 salary. Harris has rushed for over 100 yards in two straight games and has recorded four rushing majors in the past three weeks. While Harris comes with a steep sticker price, he does face a Toronto run defence allowing 121 yards per outing. Saturday’s game will be high-profile when it comes to Fantasy production, as Harris squares off against James Wilder Jr. ($8,634), who is showing signs of getting on track.

Ottawa’s William Powell ($8,240) will look to rebound from last week’s disappointing effort against Calgary as he and the REDBLACKS take on the Lions. Look for Chris Rainey ($7,686) as a potential most-used candidate if Jeremiah Johnson ($6,491) is unavailable. Stampeders back Don Jackson continues to be a bargain at $5,000 when he runs against the Alouettes.

Expect the REDBLACKS receiving corps to bounce back as well. Greg Ellingson ($6,980) is second in the rankings and teammate Diontae Spencer ($6,864) is fifth. The position is rich with potential Week 6 breakout candidates, starting with BC’s Shaquille Johnson ($2,925) and Saskatchewan’s Caleb Holley ($3,314). Winnipeg’s use of Nic Demski as a runner/receiver makes the Bombers slot an interesting Fantasy play at $3,389.

Calgary’s defence is an easy choice atop the rankings as they face a struggling Montreal team that could have Jeff Mathews ($5,852) in the huddle if Willy is unable to play. Of the four $3,200 defences, Ottawa has the best chance to succeed as they square off against a BC offence averaging just under 21 points per game.
