TMI: Getting to know B.J. Cunningham
Montreal Alouettes receiver B.J. Cunningham’s good buddy on his team is fellow pass-catcher Ernest Jackson.
The duo are such good friends that B.J. says he’d want to be stranded on a deserted island with Ernest (mostly because his pal is pretty outdoorsy and can handle building shelters and fires).
Before Cunningham hits the field for a game, he has to have his chai tea with a shot of espresso on the way to the stadium. Doesn’t matter if he’s playing at home or away, the chai tea MUST happen.

Kristina Costabile: Tell me something fans may not know about you.
B.J. Cunningham: I’m left handed. On my off days I like to go shoot hoops, play basketball, play cards. Chill, typical stuff.
KC: What’s on your pre-game playlist?
BJC: I’ve got Isaiah Rashad. The Lil Wayne album, Carter II album. That’s my go to. It’s my favourite album ever. Future, Young Dolph, 21 Savage. I do some slow jams in the beginning too just to keep me calm so I’m not too hype going onto the field. I like to mix things up with slow jams and hip hop.
KC: What are the slow jams?
BJC: Some Erykah Badu, some Lauryn Hill, you know, songs just to keep me mellow and calm and then I turn it up when I hit the field.
KC: Do you have any pre-game superstitions or routines?
BJC: On my way to the game, to the stadium, either home or away I always have to have a chai tea with a shot of espresso in it. That’s every game for some reason. I don’t know why I do it. I’ve been doing it for the last four years.
KC: If you were stranded on a deserted island with any one of your teammates, who would it be and why
BJC: Earnest. E-Jack! I feel like he’s more of an outdoors man than me so he can figure stuff out better. He’s funny so the time will go by fast. That’s my dog, we know each other so he’d be my buddy on the island if I’m stuck.
KC: If you were not a football player, what would you be doing?
BJC: I wanted to get into sports broadcasting because my major was communications. So either that or I have some clothing line stuff that I want to get into. Fashion stuff or coaching.
KC: What is your favourite football memory?
BJC: Winning the Big Ten Championship in 2010 with my team, my college team at Michigan State when we beat Penn State. That’s probably one of the biggest football memories I have. And never losing to Michigan. That feels good.
KC: What is one food that you could eat for the rest of your life?
BJC: Tacos. That was quick, right? (Laughs)
KC: What are you binge watching right now?
BJC: I just finished El Chapo! And now I’m watching Better Call Saul. I’m on season four. And I also watch Rick and Morty. I go back and binge watch Rick and Morty, I’ve watched it all already I just go back and watch it.
KC: I do that all the time with The Office!
BJC: Oh man, that’s a good one too! I was watching that yesterday, actually. That’s funny that you said that!
KC: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
BJC: Probably to fly just so I could travel anywhere, go see my family, whatever I wanted.
