Trestman: Carter won’t play on Labour Day

TORONTO — It appears Duron Carter’s debut in double blue will have to wait.

Toronto Argonauts head coach Marc Trestman revealed Monday that Carter won’t play on Labour Day, or in the Labour Day rematch with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Argos officially signed Carter on Sunday night after weeks of speculation. The enigmatic star receiver was released on Aug. 11 in a move that shocked the league.

“We’ll be able to have the opportunity to see that over the next month and see how he works, see what he does without any timetable at all or any sense that we have to get him in there, because that will not be the case,” Trestman told reporters gathered at the Argos’ facilities on Monday.

“We won’t have any sense of urgency at all that he has to play today or tomorrow or next week. We’re working at a timetable like we do with every other player, and that’s to make sure the locker-room is comfortable and he’s comfortable in the locker-room, and that he can efficiently line up and play.”

Trestman said the decision to sign Carter was made collectively, with input from trusted members of the organization that have worked with the former Riders pass-catcher.

“I didn’t make the decision alone, I made it with a number of guys in the locker-room that I trust, that could give me feedback that would be in the best interest of our team.”

Fittingly, Carter could debut on Sept. 22, a matchup with his former team the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Argos are in action on Sept. 3 in the annual Labour Day Classic.
