Prediction Time: CFL.ca writers make their Week 15 picks

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — There’s a cat fight going down in Vancouver as the main event of a Saturday evening filled with football, and a matchup that showcases two of the league’s best defensive secondary’s that has both our CFL.ca writers and you, the fans, split on who’s going to claw out the win.

Week 15 of the CFL scheduled kicks off the final third of the season, with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers playing host to the Montreal Alouettes, two teams facing questions at quarterback. One, however, has elected to stick to their usual starter in Matt Nichols for the Bombers, while the Alouettes have ended the experiment of Antonio Pipkin calling the shots, moving back to Johnny Manziel after he’s had a long month recovering from a concussion and the flu.

The REDBLACKS and Eskimos get Saturday’s triple header underway at TD Place Stadium with what has the potential of an offensive shootout, followed by Sackat… Saskatchewan’s fearsome defence looking to send the Argonauts overboard in Toronto.

Total CFL Pick ‘Em is back in 2018 with $5,000 to be awarded to the winner who’s able to Pick ‘Em better than all the rest.

Home field advantage hasn’t necessarily served the Blue Bombers well this season, as they currently sit 3-3 in games at Investors Group Field. However, the Montreal Alouettes give the Bombers an opportunity to correct their ship against a struggling opponent.

Mike O’Shea addressed the situation at the quarterback position early this week, stating that Matt Nichols will continue to be the starter and referencing the impact the veteran has had on the team since arriving in Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, the Alouettes took a different route this week with their quarterback carousel. Johnny Manziel will be returning as the starter after Antonio Pipkin threw four interceptions in last week’s loss to the BC Lions.

This matchup has the making of a potential offensive shootout between two very potent attacks.

Mike Reilly and the Eskimos are coming off of a bye week in which many of their banged up weapons had the opportunity to rest up and get ready to go for the final third of the CFL season.

Trevor Harris hushed his critics with a win over the Roughriders last week, however, will need to have a similar performance, if not better, if the REDBLACKS hope to keep up with an Edmonton offence that’s now well-rested.

Many people mentioned that they’re sorry for whoever the Roughriders have to face next after their Week 14 loss to the REDBLACKS. Well, that would be the Toronto Argonauts who have been struggling to get back on track after dropping the last three games.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson offered up some magic in his first few starts with the Argos, winning two come-from-behind games before the Double Blue started their downward spiral. The offence will need to look for James Wilder Jr. to provide a spark, and perhaps even Duron Carter, who may have a bit of a chip on his shoulder facing his former team.

Saskatchewan, currently ranked third in the West Division, hopes to make the most of the remaining six games as they could very well host a playoff game come November. The Roughriders’ defence continues to be one of the most dominant units in the league that will surely cause chaos in Toronto on Saturday.

HAM at BC

Last week’s tilt against the Stampeders showed glimpses that the Tiger-Cats can compete with the best of the west despite the loss.

Jeremiah Masoli till have a tough task at hand when the Ticats take on one of the best defensive secondary’s in the CFL, especially a week after Anthony Orange was named a Top Performer for Week 14 after his two interception performance against the Alouettes.

As for the Lions, Jonathon Jennings gets the start at quarterback with Travis Lulay expected to be out for at least four weeks with a shoulder injury. The Ticats offer up a strong secondary unit as well, and one of the better one’s against the pass.
