Rockstar QB Index: Four names remain

Adam Gagnon/CFL.ca

The Rockstar QB Index is a weekly power ranking of quarterbacks across the CFL. The ranking reflects recent performance, historical value, statistical indicators, team success and overall on-field evaluation.

TORONTO — And then there were four.

The pursuit of the 106th Grey Cup presented by Shaw continues this week, as the Stamps, Bombers, REDBLACKS and Ticats look to punch their ticket to the CFL’s championship game on Nov. 25 in Edmonton.

Quarterback play has been central to their journeys so far, with the four remaining starters proving worthy of etching their names among past winners.

With just one championship between them, Bo Levi Mitchell, Matt Nichols, Trevor Harris and Jeremiah Masoli have all written their own narratives, with a new chapter to be added over the next two weeks.

Can Nichols continue to protect the football and lead the Bombers to difficult victories on the road? And after making the biggest statement of his career, can Masoli punch his ticket to the Grey Cup in his first full season as a starter?

CFL.ca ranks the pivots for the final time this year in the latest Rockstar QB Index:

BO LEVI MITCHELL CGY
THIS WEEK: 1 | LAST WEEK: 1

Favoured to win a second career Most Outstanding Player honour, Bo Levi Mitchell is more interested in a different type of hardware for his mantle: a Grey Cup ring. The Stamps’ pivot is healthy and well-rested, and his receiving corps could see a boost with the return of DaVaris Daniels for the Western Final. There’s still a sense of something to prove for the Katy, Texas native.

JEREMIAH MASOLI HAM
THIS WEEK: 2 | LAST WEEK: 4

Talk about answering the critics. Jeremiah Masoli made it look easy in his first playoff start, picking apart the BC Lions to the tune of 259 yards and three touchdowns while averaging a stunning 13.6 yards per attempt. The dual-threat quarterback is in perfect sync with June Jones’ offence, and when things are clicking it’s a marvel to behold.

TREVOR HARRIS OTT
THIS WEEK: 3 | LAST WEEK: 2

The idle Trevor Harris drops a spot in the ranking thanks to a dominant showing by Masoli over the weekend. Harris has taken all three head-to-head meetings against his divisional counterpart, but Masoli has had the better season, ranking near the top of the league in almost every category while capturing East MOP honours. Sunday is for all the marbles.

MATT NICHOLS WPG
THIS WEEK: 4 | LAST WEEK: 3

Matt Nichols could do no wrong in Sunday’s semi-final win over the Riders, yet finds himself falling thanks to a magnificent performance from the Ticats’ Jeremiah Masoli. Nichols has thrown 109 consecutive passes without an interception, throwing eight touchdown passes and just one pick over his last six starts — all victories.
